Ex-HGTV hosts: ‘If our faith costs us a TV show, so be it

By Todd Starnes | Foxnews.com

660-Benham-BrothersThe Home & Garden Television (aka HGTV) network announced Wednesday it  has decided to pull the plug on an upcoming real estate reality show amid a firestorm of controversy from gay rights activists who accused the evangelical Christian hosts of being anti-gay and pro-life.

Twins David and Jason Benham had been in production for “Flip it Forward,” a show that was expected to debut in October on the nation’s seventh most-watched cable channel. According to Entertainment Weekly, the North Carolina brothers “would have followed families creating their dream homes from fixer-uppers.”

After the network announced the show was on the fall lineup, the militant lobbying group Right Wing Watch labeled David Benham, son of well-known evangelical pastor Flip Benham  an “anti-gay extremist” and reported on comments he made about homosexuality, abortion and divorce.

So now, these militant groups are going to start judging us based on the past behavior of our parents?

The Benhams, who are graduates of Liberty University, said they were saddened to hear about HGTV’s decision.

I reached out the Benham brothers Wednesday.  “If our faith costs us a television show then so be it,” they wrote in a statement to me.

The Benhams, who are graduates of Liberty University, said they were saddened to hear about HGTV’s decision.

“With all of the grotesque things that can be seen and heard on television, you would think there would be room for two twin brothers who are faithful to our families, committed to biblical principles, and dedicated professionals,” they wrote.

I’d be willing to bet that’s what the Robertson family, of A&E’s Duck Dynasty fame, thought, too.

HGTV refuses to say why they decided not to go forward with the show.  At 12pm ET they said this on Twitter: “HGTV has decided not to move forward with the Benham Brothers’ series.”  But their decision was announced after Right Wing Watch published a scathing attack on the brothers.

They reported that David Benham led a prayer rally outside the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte in 2012. They also took issue with comments he made to Christian radio host Janet Mefferd about the rally.

“We don’t realize that, okay, if 87 percent of Americans are Christians and yet we have abortion on demand; we have no-fault divorce; we have pornography and perversion; we have a homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation; we have adultery; we have all of the things; we even have allowed demonic ideologies to take our universities and our public school systems while the church sits silent and just builds big churches,” Benham told the host.

“We are so complacent, we are so apathetic and we are very hypocritical in the church, that’s why the Bible says judgment begins in the house of God. So when we prayed at 714 we asked God and our city to forgive us for allowing these things in the house of God.”

Right Wing Watch also took issue with his support for a North Carolina amendment that protected traditional marriage and his support of the pro-life movement.

I’m shocked that Right Wing Watch didn’t document the number of times the brothers were caught eating a Chick-fil-A sandwich.

By the way, Billy Graham supported North Carolina’s traditional marriage amendment. Does Right Wing Watch think he’s an anti-gay extremist?

The brothers reject any accusations that they are anti-gay or discriminate. They said anyone who says otherwise is not telling the truth.

“As Christians we are called to love our fellow man,” they wrote. “Anyone who suggests that we hate homosexuals or people of other faiths is either misinformed or lying.”

“Over the last decade, we’ve sold thousands of homes with the guiding principle of producing value and breathing life into each family that has crossed our path, and we do not, nor will we ever discriminate against people who do not share our views,” they wrote.

It’s too bad HGTV and those militant gay activists don’t share similar guiding principles.

Salem Radio Network host Janet Mefferd told me this is a classic case of LGBT activists trying to marginalize and silence others.

“This is an effort by LGBT movement to silence the voices of people who do not agree with them on this issue and to send a message to the American public that anybody who does not get on board with their point of view does not deserve a place in the public square,” she said.

Tom Tradup, Salem’s vice president of news and talk programming denounced the attack on the Benham brothers.

“In the 1950’s, Sen. Joseph McCarthy terrorized Americans whose views differed from his – resulting in the infamous Hollywood blacklists and people losing their jobs in the radio and television industry,” he told me. “Sadly, thanks to 2014-style McCarthyism, history appears to be repeating itself.

HGTV’s statement is insufficient. They owe it to their viewers to explain why “Flip It Forward” was canceled. There may very well be another reason why they pulled the plug. But right now, it appears that they caved in to pressure from gay activists. If that’s the case, it would make HGBT not only cowardly, but also bigoted.

It just goes to show there is no place for believers in the entertainment industry because something and someone’s got to give and compromise themselves for a position.

The occupation theory will also fail in the music industry . They will not tolerate anyone speaking against “the pride of life” because that’s very thing that fuels the industry.

It wouldn’t have worked out in their favor anyway. Many of the homeowners who are featured on HGTV shows are either homosexual or cohabiting couples. Compromise would’ve been their only option to remain on that network.

Is anyone really surprised???? This is HGTV, where any number of their on-air and behind the scenes talent are either living alternatively, straight folk but who are advocating acceptance of alternative, and/or are outright flaunting their lifestyle on the air, with their “spouses” making appearances on the programs…..what does surprise me is that the Benham brothers were ever considered by HGTV, which actually speaks to the fact that there are probably some still in the industry who are looking for good programming but must cowtow and give in to the public rants/raves of what we know to be an actual numerical minority of people (lgbt), etc. I hope the brothers find another way to continue to do what they are good at, helping families live out their dreams :-)

Will the true Christians please stand up. This is what is happening in society today. Christians will be attacked. It happened to me. I wrote and article on my personal website about those who will make into heaven and those who were deceived about making it into heaven. It was all backed up by scripture. It was told, by the higher ups in the national organization that I worked for, to remove it from the web. I refused, telling them that I was quoting the Bible and that I had the right to do so. I also told them I would not deny Christ and my faith. They told me they would come after me. They did. It was stressful. I was falsely slandered and defamed on the internet. I had frivolous lawsuits brought against me. Those who did it know they were maliciously lying and were very intentional about it. I lost a very high salaried job. But, I got through it by the strength of the Lord. I am in full time ministry for the Lord and he provides all of my needs. I couldn’t be in a better place in life. The Lord used what the devil intended as evil for his glory. Most of all I am glad that I relied on the Lord to take a stand an not compromise. In the end this is what counts. We cannot deny Christ. When I stand before him I don’t not want to be ashamed because I denied him.

We are living in the last and evil days. We will be challenged to stand for Christ. Will we pass the test.Let’s make sure we are planted on good ground and not in stoney places.
Matt 13:20-21 – But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that hears the word, and anon with joy receives it; Yet has he not root in himself, but endures for a while: for when tribulation or persecution arise because of the word, by and by he is offended.

John 16:33 – These things I have spoken unto you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Acts 14:22 – Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

Romans 8:17-18 – And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Mark 8:34-36 – For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Let’s pray that the Benham brothers will stand firm.

If the Christian community actually STOOD UP banning together and stop tucking tail I truly believe we would have a network of God fearing individuals in every arena of business & entertainment and we would not have to rely on the “World System” for approval! These brothers are absolutely right! You see more churches on every corner of every neighborhood nowadays… but what’s going inside??? Seems to me that something should be overflowing into the communities and the surrounding communities— but we’re too concerned about tithes & offerings, who got the most members and who has the best singing choir to care about what’s REALLY important! Meanwhile things like what happened to the Benham brothers is becoming an epidemic and people in general are hurting and hopeless all around us!

We have been called to be Salt and Light in this world! We season conversations with the word and wisdom of God … and we reflect the Light of Christ in the love and compassion we have towards one another. But we also have to stand for Righteousness! And standing for righteousness doesn’t mean hate… it means LOVE… John 3:16 Love…

And If we are REALLY The Church… it’s time we starting acting like it!

I am so proud of these brothers and thoroughly disgusted and disappointed with HGTV. I was a real fan of theirs, but I will not support them going forward and will make sure the entire Christian Community is aware of this travesty.

It’s great they’re not backing down but why do they think they can go into the entertainment /televisionindustry? Being a born again Christian who stands up for Christ is the equivalent of being an outcast. You can’t get you’re riches and wealth from Satan without compromising and totally rejecting God.

The LGBT (whatever the initials are) are a bunch if bullies. They are gaining far to much power. These 2 young men lost their jobs because of something their father said? That is a form of discrimination. Needless to say I will no longer tune in to HGTV.
