Carol Maraj Exclusive: Nicki Minaj’s Mom Says Tithing Helped Rapper, Shares Gospel Music, Abuse

By Christine Thomasos | Christian Post Reporter

carol-marajCarol Maraj could have been satisfied with giving birth to the Hip Hop sensation known to the world as Nicki Minaj, but the superstar’s mother has much more to offer the world.

Carol has plans to showcase her own musical abilities while praising God and helping victims of domestic violence along the way. For years, the world has experienced the hard hitting vocals of Nicki Minaj, 31, who has successfully released two number one albums and become the most-charted female rapper in the history of the Billboard Hot 100.

While The New York Times named Nicki Minaj “the most influential female rapper of all time,” it may have been her mother Carol’s Christian faith and prayers that helped propel the Queens, N.Y. girl born Onika Maraj into an international superstar.

“My life as a Christian and believer was opened to Onika. As her career continued to thrive, she developed more concerns about life,” Carol told The Christian Post. “She knew I believed in the power of prayer, therefore, she constantly called me and our pastor, to pray for different concerns she may have..

I believe by her acknowledging the power of prayer, and her strong desire to tithe together with a praying mother, contributed to her success.”

I believe by her acknowledging the power of prayer, and her strong desire to tithe together with a praying mother, contributed to her success.”

Although some people both in and outside of the Christian community have been critical of the outfit choices and rhymes chosen by Nicki Minaj, the rapper has never shied away from being vocal about her Christian faith. Carol does not focus on the criticism of her child, but instead believes one day her daughter will use her voice to sing for God.

“The Bible says to train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old would not depart from it,” Carol told CP. “I trust that one day Onika will sing unto the Father, because a seed has already been planted. Nothing is too big to God.”

Nicki Minaj previously named God and her mother as her personal heroes when speaking to The Guardian two years ago, and spoke about how church saved her family from an intense domestic violence situation. The rapper has used her music as an outlet to express the pain of the violence that took place in her family, revealing there were times when she feared her father would kill her mother.

However, Carol told CP that those terrifying times ended up bringing a broken Trinidad & Tobago-bred woman who migrated to New York City closer to Jesus Christ.

“My husband was a drug user, and would usually come home to sleep or steal. Seeking guidance in my life, I went to a revival (church) service with a neighbor who invited me,” Carol revealed. “During service, the preacher made an altar call. My neighbor then turned and whispered, ‘God is waiting for you, Carol. He wants to restore your life.'”

Carol did more than humbly bring herself to the altar; she joined the church, got baptized and became a youth leader. While she still faced issues with abuse at home, she trusted the Lord to heal her family.

Instead of leaving her abusive husband once and for all, Carol witnessed him transform by the power of Jesus Christ.

“As I grew closer to the Lord, on my spiritual journey, I started drawing my strength from Him. The scriptures gave me hope and grace to cope with my situation,” Carol told CP. “Pastors took my husband under their wings and mentored him through life and our marriage. Eventually, our marriage became less challenging because of our love for the Lord.”

Although Carol was able to overcome her domestic violence situation, many people are not as fortunate. Every nine seconds, a woman in the U.S. is battered and Carol has decided to do something about it.

After she visited a domestic violence shelter and spoke to a group of young women, Carol was reminded of the pain, fear and confusion that she once felt as an abused woman. The emotional experience made her realize a calling on her own life, to create a foundation that would help women like these.

Two years ago, The Carol Maraj Foundation was born. The foundation provides encouragement, emotional support, a mobile beauty spa and financial empowerment through various programs.

The Carol Maraj foundation aims to help all women who contact the organization, both in and outside of shelters. Carol hopes to one day have her own facility to house victims of domestic violence in emergency situations, where she can offer rehabilitation training and job-readiness programs.

“The ultimate goal, however, is to be financially independent to meet all of these needs and more,” she told CP.

While Carol thinks it is important for everyone to recognize the warning signs of abuse to help themselves or others in the future, she also offered an important piece of advice to people who may need help overcoming domestic violence situations.

“I think it is very important for couples to have open communication in their relationships. in addition to communication, you need to show respect for one another, and include prayers in your daily life,” Carol told CP “I learned to release every area of my life to the Lord- physical, emotional, social and spiritual… And that is what I think everyone should do to help overcome any issues.”

It is this mindset that has helped Carol release the pain in her life and prompted her to start singing to the Lord. Earlier this year, Carol released her song “God’s Been Good” and has plans to make a full fledged gospel studio album.

“I have continuously been working on new songs in the studio, and plan to continue writing and singing,” she told CP. “I intend to release at least 5 full gospel albums during my career. I also want to write a book based on overcoming the storms.”

While Carol plans to have her first gospel album completed by early fall, she is not giving up on the possibility that one day she may collaborate with her famous daughter musically.

“There is a possibility,” Carol told CP. “God is in control of everything.”

Carol’s single “God’s Been Good” can be purchased from iTunes by clicking here.

A portion of the song’s proceeds will be donated toward domestic violence awareness. For more information about the Carol Maraj Foundation, please visit here.

  1. Well, apparently all one has to do is claim to be a Christian and have their mom claim that you’re a follower of Jesus and it’s automatically true. Who cares how you live or the messages you CONSTANTLY send out to the millions of teenagers who listen to your music…as long as you claim to be a true Christian then you’re good.
You can throw away 1 Thess 5:22 “Abstain from all appearance of evil”. It apparently doesn’t matter if every aspect of your lifestyle is diametrically opposed to how the Bible says to live.

She can rap about every sinful sexual act, drugs, violence, etc. but she’s saved because her mom says so.

  2. After learning how wicked the entertainment industry is, it should be clear that being a successful artist isn’t a ‘blessing’ from the God. Lord knows what they have to go through to get to the top. Even if we come out of the most horrible situations, it’s important to learn that it’s not about us. Our sinful nature is focused on self. We have to remind ourselves daily that it’s not about us but about Jesus and His Kingdom. I would think that a Christian mother would weep and be on her knees constantly if her daughter had a career like Nicky Minaj. Instead she is proud of her and wants to collaborate! And even brings God into it! I’m thankful of the teachings of pastor Lewis about the deficits we grow up with and how we have to let the Lord heal us instead of seeking a platform to be validated by the world.

  3. I don’t know what to say here. I pray that Nicki will giver her life to the Lord. I have noticed a change in her appearence. Something is different about her now.

  4. I understand that when we pray life seems to get worse harder etc. and even in those difficult times we are to hold on to our faith and trust God. So many times i hve seen pple/saints say they have the holy ghost and can cast out demons, and heal the sick. What i am trying to get at is N.M. I don’t know of its an act or real, but she calls a demon or familiar spirit Roman (she is another sick person with money, i dont think that is a coincide) to come out. And im like come out of where, is he hiding or in a closet i mean where? So if her pastor and mom prays for her, she blaspheme the Lord in her music and she is bisexual, and they couldn’t do anything for her spiritually? Just fame, mess, destruction of self, and fortune…..o.k. I do know this doesn’t seem like wwjd at all……still pray for all no matter what. Strange flesh!

  5. Hold up!! Isn’t this the same woman who says she has a demon boy living inside of her named Roman and dressed like a Cardinal for an awards show. There is a video on Youtube where she allows the demon to speak. Who in the world is her pastor?

    1. I was thinking the same thing, and WHO was she, her mom, and pastor praying to because it definitely wasn’t to the God that I know!!! This mess is ridiculous!!!

    2. Thank you. I hadn’t heard what you shared, but if true, I totally agree with your statement. If you are in Christ, I don’t know how you lend yourself to the world like she does, expose herself on Instagram as she does, etc..

  6. We used to hear that it does NOT matter if your parents are born-again, its YOu who have to be born-again.We do not hear that muslims are born muslim , hindus born hindus, rasta born rastas,….CHRISTIANS are not naturally conceived but Spiritually.

  7. What is not of faith is sin period……..Now the devil have people thinking that The God of the bible blesses sin as long as money is made, and put to a good use. This is the doctrine of demons.
Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, (I Timothy 4:1 NKJV)
Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, (I Timothy 4:1 NKJV)
But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.
Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds. I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. (Revelation 2:14, 20-23 NKJV)

  10. as far as the mom’s testimony, it sounds great. But I know I have to be cautious in saying this, but, if God is the. God of the impossible. Then it is not impossible to take Nikki! who clearly is not living for The Lord right now, and transform her….I do NOT in anyway agree with Nikki ‘s music ,and the way she acts n behaves. I REPEAT I DO NOT AGREE WITH HER MUSIC OR HER PRESENT LIFESTYLE? What I can say is this, there are a many Christians parents who have trained up their children in the ways of The Lord , and those same children are not serving Him right now. So for all those parents who have children lost children, unsaved children, keep on praying, crying out to God for them. So I can not blame her mom, if she truly loves The Lord, for waiting on God’s promise in reference to her prodigal child.. Peace.

  11. Stop! Tell the truth and shame the devil. Now yal know Nicki MINAJ is far from the Lord. The Lord may have allowed her to blow up, as He is in control at the end of the day and allows things to happen, whether good or bad, right or wrong, but that does not mean that He condones her career choice. It takes more than tithing and prayer to be a true follower of Jesus. I’m really trying not to judge her, but I’ve been seeing this theme lately with people in the media, claiming that certain celebrities are Christians – i.e. Beyonce (her pastor just did an interview about her in a Houston paper last week), Justin Bieber (recently came out he just got baptized), and now Nicki. Forgive me for not wanting any of these people to be the face of the Church. Christians already have a bad rep for being hypocrites and boy if these three don’t fit that stereotype. Anyway, everybody knows thatHollywood is Satan’s playground. True Christians don’t make it far there far.

  12. Wait now, I gotta respond to this!!!! I’m so
Sick of this woman, she really needs to sit down!!!! God did not get nicki minaj where she is,
The devil did, it’s more than just not being saved. That girl is possessed, clearly illuminati. But anyone who can’t sit thru an interview without hissing and growling, every face she makes is demonic scowl, a demon manifesting, come on, there’s a lot possessed singers , beyonce , Rihanna, etc, however even when they do an interview the demon sits there until they go on stage, even marilyn Manson , whatever that is, sat thru interviews without the demon coming out everytime , so this is sickening because when her mama makes this so called gospel, a demon will be behind it because if it wasn’t for devil daughter she would not be known, so that’s another trick if enemy using her to find her way into people’s homes, I mean one demon is named after someone who only made demonic movies, and was caught in scandal with young girls while married, i pray this never hits the ground, maybe it won’t because she’s been talking about it forever and has not done it yet

  13. Oh and if she knows the power of prayer why isn’t she even bothering
Casting any of them out, I understand she has several , she’s admitted this, and why is she supporting a daughter who levitates on national tv and does other satanic things on TV, sounds fishy

  14. ….as we like to say during altar call, “and yet there is still room, room for one more…” Let us not only be mindful of the bad fruit she is currently bearing and steer others away from the path she is now on, but pray that before it is too late, that NM eyes are opened and she ask God to rebuke those spirits around her so that she may freely press towards the cross. Jesus did pray for her as well….she is not lost, as long as there is still breath left in her body. But, if she chooses “roman” and such, then it is HER Choice. I hope she is prepared for the consequences of that choice. What am I saying???!!! No One can prepare for THAT choice, so I pray Mercy Lord!

  15. What profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul….
Only a strong -God first parent can avoid compromising and
making excuse for a wealthy celebrity child.

  17. I’m all for God changing and transforming lives for His glory because that’s what He does. However, this thing with Nicki Manaj is ridiculous. You don’t hide your Christian faith, yet your lifestyle does not show you are living for God in any way, shape, or form. Ummmm…this doesn’t line up nor does it make any sense.

  18. I have seemed to notice a trend. Theese artists started off in the Christian faith but desired to be an aspiring actor or singer and have adopted the ways of this world, so much that you would have never believed that they were raised in the church. They forsake the Christian faith for the pleasures of the world because there’s more opportunities getting it that way.

  19. Honestly I just skimmed through the article. This is such an insult…everybody is not deceived . Christian Post read the bible first.

  20. If the music industry was of God, I would still be working concerts. The lyrics are based on stories, and fables.
It’s a story of works. Only through Jesus Christ you can be saved from the penalty of sin. You are required by God to live according to His commandments, if you don’t know what is required, how can you say you are a born again believer, in Christ Jesus. This is whats wrong today. Traditional churches were told what to preach and teach. And these false famous socalled pastors send mix messages. Apostle Paul told believers to follow me
as I follow Christ. If you are in Christ and These socalled famous pastor are leading people in the wrong direction, and you know they are, you have the authority to rebuke them.
