Laid-Back Michigan ‘Night Club’ Allows Christians, Non-Believers to Express Themselves

“I wanted to show people that Christianity is fun,” Darryll Stinson, event coordinator at the Phi Light Lounge told The Christian Post in an interview on Monday. “You can worship God in dance, you can worship Him in your testimony, or even just by having fun and being yourself,” Stinson added. He described the typical night at Phi Light: 40 to 60 people enjoying impromptu sessions of dancing, guest rappers and speakers, and featured poets.

“Christ gave us liberty and freedom to express ourselves,” J.J. Jones, the founder of Phi Light, told CP. “

God came at me saying, ‘JJ, you don’t have to be tight. You can’t reach people if you don’t show people where you came from.'”
Phi Light celebrated its anniversary on Saturday.

That night, Stinson explained, the ‘night club’ featured a cypher – “a hip hop beat and different rappers freestyling on it.” Some of these rappers weren’t Christian, but the fellows at Phi Light shared the gospel anyway. “People don’t have to be in a dark night club, drunk, just to have fun,” Stinson said. While he and Jones choose not to “idolize the things of this world,” they still enjoy their nights.

Jones had a different view for Phi Light at the start and the “club’s” music and outreach developed over time. A senior at Central Michigan University, he explained that “our campus is spiritually dying, dry, and didn’t have a lot of opportunities for people to share their faith in a way that is open and fun.” He founded Phi Light for Christians in the community to fellowship, network, and share visions with those who attend different churches.

When the idea struck him, Jones admitted, he had “no clue” how to bring Phi Light about. After sharing the idea with different churches, he found a Christian landlord willing to rent a place. Churches donated baked goods or money for food, and everything came together.

Phi Light is built around five pillars, “to live, to ignite, to grow, to harbor, and to testify,” Jones explained. He aims to create an atmosphere where people are comfortable to be themselves (live), and to express themselves freely (testify). He also hopes churches will network with one another, igniting new visions and growing as a community, in a safe place (harbor).

Phi Light meets monthly, altering its schedule to avoid conflicts with events in the community. Most attendees are Christian, but this past Saturday most of the cypher consisted of non-Christian rappers, Jones explained. As the result of their attendance, Jones and Stinson were able to share the Gospel with them and the people they brought.

“They’ve labeled it as a ‘Christian Night Club,'” Stinson told CP, and the label stuck. He thanked local churches, listing First Church, Potter’s House, Faith Community, and His House.

As a manager of a Christian event which attracts a following of college students, Stinson advised pastors to meet young people where they are. “It’s easy to tell people to come to church, but it’s harder to go sit with ‘sinners’ and be able to relate to them and love them without judging them,” the manager said.

Stinson acknowledged that some of Phi Light’s attendees come from the bar. “Yes, drunkenness is a sin,” he allowed, “but how do you expect to meet those people unless you welcome them?”

Stinson said he hopes Phi Light will impact both secular rappers and Christian ministers. “We want to show rappers who rap about sex, money, guns, and drugs that it’s ok to be a Gospel rapper,” he said. Meanwhile, he advised pastors “don’t look at this as a party scene, look at it as a ministry opportunity.

The gospel is whatever you want it to be nowadays! I don’t understand it, guess I’m a lame, boring Christian that doesn’t know how to have fun like the “new-agers ”

    :-(

  2. Meela

    Sad…
Why can’t people just come to Christ because they want to change? What if being a Christian isn’t fun because sometimes it isn’t.. Sometimes it’s hard. Of course there is Gods joy and fun moments. But that’s not what it’s about. Its about changing ourselves into disciples of Christ.

  3. Wanda

What???? You have got to be kidding me. Boy oh boy, any ole mess and stamping God on it. Now show me where God is being glorified and satan terrified with lives being changed for the Kingdom of God’s sake, come mon now!

  4. Hope

Amazing how we cannot wait for the real “fun” of Revelation of God…We just cannot wait upon the Lord. If we cannot wait on God, we will seek other methods fulfilling our dryness…

  5. Kenneth Scaled

Awesome vision for ministry bro. My prayer is that it continues to grow and draw new souls to Christ. I’m an ole school saint from the Chi but we used to get it in just like that in the 80’s. (54yrs young) I played drums in five different gospel groups. We performed alot there. It was called ‘Agape Village’. Man that was the spot! So cool to hear the dream didn’t die. One love my brothers.

Btw…..don’t listen to the haters. I’ve been saved almost forty years now and the night spot didn’t do me ANY spiritual harm. Keep fighting the GOOD fight!

Wait a minute…did you just quote the bible there? So tell me, whats your point exactly? What are you really trying to prove? Where you share your testimonies and the word?? Like there aint no decent places anymore. Isaiah 4;1 talks of churches using the name of Christ, but doing their own thing. Thats exactly what you are doing. Praising God in extreme canarlity. Its a pity. God have mercy.

  8. Iris

Clearly I am from the old school….because my bible tells me to come out from among them, to not indulge is the things that the world loves to indulge in. True, Jesus did go into Matthew’s house to meet the folk where they were too but I do not recall Jesus going there once a week on a regular! Jesus went to show them a Better Way, not for Him to saturate Himself in what they liked to do…

    1. Andre Edwards

To be things to all men, don’t mean that I must be a crackhead to teach a crackhead. So will it fine for me to go into a strip club to minister?

  9. Charles A Stinson

They are still trying to bring the world in the church. There is no Christian night club. It’s just a regular club just like the rest of them.

  10. Raymond

There is no excuse called “stupid” that will save these new counterfeit “Christians” from the hell their blasphemies deserve. The spirit of Antichrist gives them free to and liberty to express them”SELF.” And that is the problem. “SELF.” Jesus warned us:

34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
    Mark 8:34-38

In other words, Jesus gave us the right and freedom to: “DIE TO SELF” and all those worldly carnal lusts so that we might be saved.

These people do not love Jesus, they love the world and have no shame in exploiting the Holy Name Jesus to indulge their sins.

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
    1st John 2:15-18

The shame is that so many Church Pastors are all too glad to jump on the band wagon and support this compromise of gross shame. We have been called out to be separate and holy. Not to wallow in the sinful pleasures of the world.

  11. Marcus

Is this venture saving souls? I’m not sure what “christian” wants to be out at 1 or 2 o clock in the morning…Be in the world not of the world Paul said it best.

  12. Joshua

So….I’ve never heard of a Christian fraternity before. I’m not the smart guy on Fraternities and Sororities, but I know that once you surrender your life to Christ, you’re adopted into God’s family. What’s the need for a Christian frat? Anyway, since I don’t know these people personally, I hope their intentions are genuinely about the gospel at their fun house.

  13. TOMMY BURNS

Another hot mess this is a bunch of junk and any church supporting this mess needs to go back to the altar. I see flesh written all over this and the faternity wake up people Stevie Wonder can see what’s up with this a mile away.

  14. shayshay

people just want an excuse to keep holding on to sin…When i was a lukewarm so called believer i came up with foolish lies as well to cater my personal sin and things I didn’t want to give up on because I liked the sin of foolishness… God is calling people to get out of sin and foolishness…

  15. ivan

I guess im too settled in my ways to conform to this psudeo-Christian club scene. Christian “club” seems oxymoronic. Even the music sounds satanic! im not that old (29 to be exact) so I am in (but definitely not of) this generation of young people. From my finite perspective, this generation is infected. We are seeking for alternatives when Jesus should be and is enough. We’ve mixed that which is holy with profane for so long that we have lost our identity and are powerless and spiritually deformed. what we REALLY need, we dont want. we NEED an anointed, yoke destroying revival. We need to sorrow fully repent and turn from our wicked ways. Fun?!? Why should webe having “fun” when homosexuality is taking over, America is turning her back on Israel, we have an antiChrist agenda in the White House, there’s wars and rumors of wars…the Bible is being fulfilled! JESUS is coming yet we want to have fun?!?! WAKE UP young people!! 2nd Chronicles 7:14

  16. Sean and Sheila

I don’t believe God spoke to him, but and Ascension Angel (demon) spoke to him and deceived him. Thank you Ex Ministries for all you have done in your DVDs that gave us the truth and warned us about all this perversion and wickedness that is exploding on the scene today. Because of the Word of God things like this should not be a surprise to us or catch us off guard.

Keep blowing the trumpet and sounding the alarm Ex Ministries.

  17. Sean and Sheila

Btw, born again believers don’t live to Fulfill Ungodly Needs of the old nature (FUN). We deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Christ, knowing that denying our flesh is not fun, its life changing and fulfills the Godly needs of our new natures.

    1. Jamison

The photos speak for themselves showing God is not being glorified? That’s quite a leap looking at just two photos. One with just a few people looking like they are dancing in a well lit environment, and not inappropriately I might add. The second with a guitarist and two singers on the microphone. Wow, you have made quite a leap of pre-judgement. I think one would have to actual visit the place and check it out and then judge for themselves.

  19. Niya

I have more of a problem with some of the commenters on this post than I do with the actual post. Some of you people act like you’ve got it all figured out…like you don’t make mistakes and sin in Jesus’ name. But you’re self righteous. These young people may not have it right but they are trying, that is more than I can say about most people who tagline themselves as Christian these days. Rather than pray that God would reveal to them His perfect will, you bash someone who is supposed to be your brother or sister in the Lord. We should judge one another but it should be done in love. Speak the truth, everyone his neighbor, IN LOVE. GENTLY guide those who oppose themselves. That’s bible, folks. Hatred through speech or thought or action toward our brethren is antithetical to the will if our Lord who said the world would know that He is who He says He is by the way we love one another. I am guilty of the same. Highly critical and self righteous many a time but the Holy Spirit is the One who guides all His people to truth. May God forgive us and these young people for mixing the holy with the profane. GOD Bless you all.

    1. Lynnette

Haven’t viewed the comments…but if the issue is with saying this is not right…that is NOT bashing anyone but maybe you are? Sometimes the hyper politically correct climate we are in is promoting everyone to not speak out respectfully. I agree their intentions may be right, and that many are not attempting to reach world for Christ but God commands us to be a light & being a light by demonstrating Gods love as it really is in the right ways (loving sinner but not the sin) is enough. We don’t have to conform to the world to win it…it does this among each other every day & that is simply the world. I also am not personally sure if they are sinning…it just all depends on WHAT is occurring in the Christian nightclub. If no perversion & wicked behavior is tolerated…then allowing non-Christians to have a clean fun environment I think is definitely ok & hopefully you will form a relationship that might bless a non-Believer. However, if what they do that is displeasing to our LORD in the world night club is allowed…that is an oxymoronic & not the way to go clearly.

      1. Niya

Thx Linette for your reply. I guess what I’m saying is that reproof is received when it’s done in love. I would just hate to be the one who was spotlighted on a Christian website in a condescending, accussatory manner about something I did that maybe wasn’t holy spirit lead but in my ignorance I thought was rather than be reproved gently by those who REALLY care about me and my walk with Christ. Sometimes people on this forum remind me of the church in Revelation that stood strong against sin but forgot their first love, Jesus. We were worthless, confused and blind to Truth before Truth opened our eyes and set us free. Let’s seek God for a righteous approach to dealing with error like this in the body.

p.s. Just looked at the YT link, seems like a place for Christian young people who want to particpate in a social fun (not a praise & worship event) in a clean emvrioment, similar to Christian comedians, cruises, etc. If correct…good idea especially for young ‘folks’ on college campus enviroment to have that alternative.
