‘God Loves Sex’ Billboard Turns Heads On Pennsylvania Highway

Restored Church of Wilkes-Barre, PA paid for a billboard along Route 309 that reads “‘I love sex.’ -God” and promotes the church’s new sermon series that will focus on the biblical Song of Solomon.

“What we want to do is let people know that the Bible is relevant to everyday life. When it comes to sexuality… God is the the inventor, author and creator of it,” Restored Church’s Pastor Dan Nichols told HuffPost.

The Song of Solomon is indeed full of some of the sexiest passages in the Bible. The first lines read:

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—
for your love is more delightful than wine.
Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes;
your name is like perfume poured out.
No wonder the young women love you!
Take me away with you—let us hurry!
Let the king bring me into his chambers.

The series will kick off on September 7 with a sermon by Dr. Mark McGinniss of Baptist Bible Seminary who wrote his doctoral dissertation on the Song of Solomon. Pastor Nichols and other Restored Church pastors will lead the subsequent worship services, ending the series with a Q&A panel on the final Sunday.

“If the culture can be so bold, I think the church can be so bold and speak directly on the subject and be up front about it,” Nichols told WNEP 16.

Nichols, who is 26 and married, said he hopes the billboard will attract millennials from local colleges to the church. Although he said the church’s overarching message emphasizes sex between a husband and wife, one of the sermons will address sex in single life which might be more pertinent to a younger audience. Overall, Nichols told HuffPost he believes the topic will resonate with all.

“We want to reach college kids, but the message is multi-generational,” Nichols said.

Restored Church opened its doors on September 8, 2013 and has a congregation of roughly 100, Nichols told HuffPost. The church’s first billboard was erected for its grand opening with a message that read “No perfect people allowed”, with the intention, Nichols said, of highlighting Jesus’ own perfection.

The strategy worked at the time, but the feedback over the recent billboard has been mixed, Nichols said, with particularly harsh criticism coming from other Christians.

“Evangelicals can be pretty divisive amongst themselves,” Nichols told HuffPost. “We’ve gotten a lot of flack from other Christians.”

Restored Church tweeted a picture of its shiny new billboard on Wednesday — two days after the nearby Wilkes University commenced classes:

Jesus taught us to be fishers of men. There’s many types of fish/bait. There’s nothing dishonest or misleading about the billboard. Most of us forget how intimate God is. There’s nothing filthy about sex with the context God created. It’s the WORLD, OUR FLESH and the enemy that always twists something wholesome and natural into something perverted. I think this billboard is AWESOME BAIT considering the world we live today. Hate to say it but some other ministries might be a little ‘disappointed’ they didn’t think of it first 😉 LOL

Bottom line — its perversion. Why a billboard? Why pragmatism? Why manipulate people into attend YOUR CHURCH? Is evangelism, preaching the gospel less effective? Or have some of us become so innovative and lazy that we have to apply gimmicks and “SEXY” wordplay to get people to come to a building. (2 Cor. 4:2 is justified). The church got what it was seeking “FREE PUBLICITY” A billboard with catchy phrases don’t draw people to God, the Holy Spirit draws. The subject of SEX is being lifted up here. The sign said, “God loves Sex” so is he having sex? We as believers know the purpose of sex and that’s self explanatory. But what about a non-believer? They would have saved money by promoting this teaching series in a church bulletin. Other than that — This is a waste of church resources and time. Come on people — Tetaun Moffett

There has got to be a mute tactful way to grab people’s attention. But honestly the only message for singles in regards to sex is abstinence until marriage.

I think we as the “Church” have to be careful of how we advertise different subjects such as ‘sex’ and make sure what the advertisement is saying is not sending the wrong message or causes any one to stumble. If I had a worldview of how I saw saw things I would have thought this church was saying that God either is sexual in nature or that sex any kind of way is okay. I would not have thought from those few words that sex is just okay between 1 man and 1 woman.
Personally if I was the one in leadership advertising something for my church I would have said it differently … like just inviting the community, members, and friends to join us on the subjects like sex, or the Biblical stance on sex inside of marriage. There’s a way of wording things without being too Liberal or too Tabooish and Traditional only.. whatever scripture say of course, is the only way it could be .
And of course, if Anyone whose ever read the Song of Solomon knows it was a sexual relationship between a man or woman (married we believe) . But since everyone doesn’t know that it would be wise to use some simple words like: God ordained sex for marriage. . Or another synonym for ordain. And again, invite the community out to share in those services providing a question and answer time. Because ppl do have questions. Even about what we call ‘Grey areas’…

I think the idea is wonderful! God definitely intended for a husband and wife to enjoy sex for more than just procreation! I wish when I was younger my church spoke on sex and how God viewed it rather than the negatives of sex. May have saved me from trial and error! Much blessings to the church and their efforts to shed light on what God says about sex!

Again are we reading the same text ? Jesus clearly states that none are given to marriage where the FATHER
abides . So how those HE love sex ? Ugh ! And he does not send out beggars . Don”t let them get your blood
pressure up Minister Moffett . Kudos to Abigail , well said .

I’m annoyed how churches are degrading themselves in order to reach sinners. It’s always the same talk about being relevant and appealing to the minds of people who hate God. Regardless of what you do most sinners are going to hell. Even the few who become born again the majority of them will reject God along the way and not turn back from sin. The church should not be primarily focused on getting sinners into the church but focused on growing in obedience to God.

The reason people do more and more outrageous things in order to get sinners into the church is because they don’t really see God working in their lives and as a result they don’t really believe in God . They’re literally just going through the motions because they don’t know or understand God.
