bilde-738x1024Yes, you’ve read the title correctly. A 14 year old girl is graduating from COLLEGE. Young  Thessalonika Arzu-Embry, who lives on the Great Lakes Naval Base, will be graduating from Chicago State University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Thessalonika actually started college at the age of 11 at the College of Lake County. She will end next month with the degree from Chicago State.  With all of the talk about kids in Chicago not being prepared to succeed, this young lady is showing that there is a great deal of brilliance right in the heart of the south side of the city.

Thessalonika doesn’t attend regular high school like every other freshman her age. She actually wakes up early with her mother, Wonder Embry, and makes the commute from home at the Great Lakes Naval Station near North Chicago to Chicago State on the South Side of the city. On the way to school, Thessalonika and her mother study theory and talk about homework assignments.

Thessalonika dedicates all of her hard work to her mother, who keeps her motivated.

“My mother is a strong inspiration to my success. She is a veteran of the United States Navy, and when she finished her tour, she home-schooled my brother and I”.

Wonder Embry adds that she was just doing right by her daughter.

“The parents are the most influential force in their own children’s lives, and they have the power to influence them to do good and to go forward,” she said

Embry was home-schooled until she was eight and received the equivalent of a high school diploma. Passing an entrance exam, she got into the College of Lake County and enrolled to study psychology.

Embry carries a 3.9 GPA and is a member of the College of Lake County Honors program and enjoys studying unlike any other kid her age.

Thessalonika plans to continue her studies at a graduate program for clinical psychology at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, a private college in North Chicago, or she may also attend Stanford University.

Embry is set to graduate August 30th.  Wish her luck!

Thessalonika’s story reminds us that with hard work, family support and faith, you can do practically anything. Your age doesn’t define your intelligence or abilities. Never underestimate your potential.

  1. I read a post on Yahoo about homeschooling a year ago. A woman who responded stated that she homeschooled her children the entire time they were growing up and all of her children could speak four languages by the time they were adults. I am praying that I am able to homeschool once I have children.

  2. Now I understand the hebrew levite schools in the old testament.
Never understood how those youngsters could receive and hold so much informartion.
Us people are capable of so much more if we receive the right training and love.

  3. AWESOME! I am a firm believer in education. I salute all this young lady has accomplished and I believe that along with that vital homeschooling she received under her mom’s watch that she also got vital teaching on the Word of God! She is going to be a great example of the Proverbs 31 woman to the right man of God! God bless her and her family!

  4. I think that justice is done to students who are home-schooled. Their parents spend a lot of time and effort ensuring that the are given the best as oppose to the public education system where teachers are paid for wasting students time. At the end of the day the students leave with a big gap in their learning.

  5. Praise God! God is the one who gives knowledge, intelligence and understanding! I wonder what psychologists would think of a kid like this with their theories about different life stages and brain development etc.
I also wonder how many intelligent kids are being told they can’t amount anything just because they find themselves in the wrong place!

May everything God has planed for you be fulfilled in the name of Jesus. I also pray God to prepare the man of your life and give him values and wisdom in the name of Jesus!

  6. “She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed;…” – Proverbs 31:27, 28

  7. CONGRATS to this wonderful young lady, and her amazing mom,,,,Fox will do exceedingly ,abundantly above all that we can ask of think according to the power that work in us.and he is no respect of person,,,what he did for this beautiful family he can do the same for us,,so all parents should be encouraged…BECAUSE OUR GOD IS GOD,
