‘Losing My Religion:’ Gospel Singer Kirk Franklin Apologizes for ‘Homophobia’ in Church

By Heather Clark | christiannews.net

FORT WORTH, Texas — Grammy Award-winning gospel artist Kirk Franklin, who released his new album “Losing My Religion” on Friday, told reporters this week that he “apologizes” for “homophobia” in the Church, stating that Christians have turned the Bible into “a homophobic manual.”

Kirk Franklin - Okay Sign“I want to apologize for all of the hurtful and painful things that have been said about people in the Church that have been talented and gifted and musical, that we’ve used and we’ve embarrassed them and made sermons—‘Adam and Steve,’ and all this other horrible crap that we’ve done,” Franklin told The Grio. “We have not treated them like people, human beings. We’re talking about human beings, men and women that God has created as people.”

He acknowledged that the Bible does count homosexuality as a sin along with fornication and adultery, but said that the Scriptures also talk about grace.

“That’s what the Bible talks about,” Franklin admitted. “And you know what else the Bible talks about along with that? It talks about grace. It talks about love. It talks about mercy, because we are all in need of that.”

“The Bible is not a book that’s an attack on gay people,” he continued. “It’s not a book written to attack gay people.”

“It feels that way sometimes,” interviewer Chris Witherspoon remarked.

“I agree with you,” Franklin replied. “It’s horrible.”

The gospel singer, known for his songs “Stomp” and “Lean on Me,” told the outlet that he wants people to understand that God is about love and grace.

“It is horrible that we have made it where the Bible is a homophobic manual,” Franklin said
. “That’s not what the Bible is. I mean you want to talk about things that God gets at: pride and jealousy and envy and haughtiness and arrogance. But what we also see is God sending His Son to save us all, because we were all—straight, gay or whatever—lost and in need of a Savior, and there’s room at the cross for all of us.”

Franklin says that the title of his new album “Losing My Religion,” his first after a five-year hiatus, is meant to relay that he thinks the love of God should be preached over the fear of God.

“I want people to see the love of God and not the fear of God,” he explained to Pix11. “I want people to be able to experience how much God loves us as His kids. And most people will never have that view of God if we keep putting the rules in front of them instead of the relationship.”

“In the beginning religion, created a mask/For generations, church was where we went to go hide/Rules without relationship is empty inside,” Franklin also posted on Instagram, presumably quoting the lyrics from his album, which released today. “There’s room at the cross for everyone, even me/Religion is a prison, but truth sets us free.”

Reaction to Franklin’s comments has been mixed.

“Amen, Kirk. It always blows my mind how people can profess faith and the love of Christ with one side of their face, while preaching hatred and bigotry against a segment of God’s children with the other side,” wrote commenter Dawn Givens under the Grio article.

“He [expletive] called the Bible ‘God’s love letter’ and then later says that he can’t change what the Bible says about homosexuals. But then in some other way implicitly admits that people have used the Bible in their preachments against homosexuals,” commenter named Danielle Black wrote, expressing confusion. “Which one is it? Is it a ‘love letter’ or not?”

“First of all, remember that Kirk Franklin does not speak for the entire African-American Christian community, therefore he cannot issue an apology for them,” commenter Billy Boyd wrote, disagreeing with Franklin. “Because someone chooses to stand on biblical truth does not make them homophobic. To the contrary, they do not fear homosexuals, but most love them [yet] hate the sin.”

First of all, the Holy Bible DOES attack GAY people! I don’t know what “bible” he is reading, but MY bible (KJV) tells all of the story about Sodom and Gomorrah!! Maybe he does not see total destruction as an attack… smh

This brother seems determined to openly rebel against Christ more and more. I don’t know his motive but it looks like an attempt enhance the sale of his new album. Whenever I read read about these men who openly compromise the Word of God for this abominable sin of homosexuality, I shudder at how this impacts the next generation.

So according to Mr Franklin, the church must apologize for saying what the Bible has already calls a sin and an abomination. The Apostle Paul warned the church about the rise of these false Christians and their ideologies in Acts 20:29-30:

“For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them”

The abuse of the word “love” is a satanic method to disarm the war against sin. It’s because God loves people why He does not want them to die in their sinful lifestyle. Remember if you don’t warn a friend of their sinful behavior, you are not their friend!!! Mr Franklin needs to be reminded that God is love; but He is also a consuming fire (Deut 4:24 and Hebrews 12:29)

I pray for the soul of Mr. Franklin that he wakes up while there is still time before God turns him over to a reprobate mind. Indeed it is a warning to all of us who profess Christ as Lord. No compromise of the Word of God. end of story.

  3. Lord you have given me peace

His comments do not surprise me. It been a long time coming.

What concerns me is how he is identifying or labeling the church as “homophobic”. Express your opinion, speak for yourself, and don’t throw in a whole group of people, who you do not personally know or seen how they witness about Jesus Christ death, burial and resurrection. How they minister and interact with homosexuals. The few instances that Franklin may have witness, does not make it standard procedure that all Christians follow. I am not saying that these instances of disrespect do not happen, but what I am saying is that we are supposed to shine the light of Jesus Christ to the world. We are to love the sinner but hate the sin.

Why condemn the whole body of Christ for the actions of the few. The secular world is doing a good job on its own passing judgement on the church. Any instance, worldly or church centered is blown out of proportion. Why join the voices speaking against our sinless savior and his teachings. The world will hate us because they hated Jesus Christ. Why is he so set on appeasing the world?

The Bible is the Voice & Word of “GOD. Every Created & Living Being must first hear the voice and word of & from “GOD & then we all must do what the voice & word of “GOD has instructed of us in & tells us what “GOD has said & Why “GOD has said it & what “GOD wants us to do with what “GOD has said & instructed of us all in Life. And yes ” GOD is Love and yes ” JESUS died on the Cross for Our Sins and yes it has been said that “JESUS Lves the back slider and “All Sin is Sin and “GOD Hates Sexual immortality & Homosexual & Lesbians Spiritual enfluences are all acts of the flesh & is also an abomination unto “GOD.

Kirk is way off the mark, you either accept the word or you don’t. You can’t have it both ways. He acknowledges it’s a sin, but if it’s preached about or addressed that’s hate? No, it’s not. Telling people the truth of God’s word is showing love, down playing it, twisting the meaning of a passage, or calling it hate is creating dishonesty and confusion, falling right into the enemy’s hand.

  6. Pastor Ca'ren Faulk

What a ridiculous statement the truth is; most of those sticking up for sin are in sin themselves. Sin is just that and we need to confess it and repent( stop doing that sin!) Kirk Franklin needs to sit down and learn the word of God. Jesus is full of grace and mercy, but to willfully sin is taking advantage of God’s grace! Their sin has become a lifestyle and that is not wanting grace but acceptance! Nobody is winning except Satan his lab is working beautifully!

    Pastor Ca’ren (the outspoken Lady4Christ)

  7. Denise Courts

Kirk Franklin does indeed need the cross! He does NOT speak FOR GOD on ANY MATTER LET ALONE SCRIPTURE! Whether you or i or any man like it or not, homosexuality/lesbianism IS AN ABOMINATION IN GOD’S EYES; however, while HIS MERCIES ARE EVERLASTING, He IS CALLING ALL MEN/WONEN TO REPENTANCE AND TO BE SAVED. Whether they believe it like it or not there is a consequence/ consequences for these sins just as for others; how many i know personally(family members and friends) who have physically and mentally suffered and died because of the abomibable lifestyle and sexual activity! Lord have mercy upon all these men and women!

  8. ollie williams

    GOD IS HOMOPHOBIC?
So, now Kirk Franklin is calling GOD homophobic because HE condemns homosexuality as a sin? Christians do not hate people who are homosexual, but we stand with GOD and the standards HE has set for the governance of HIS Kingdom. GOD, indeed, loves all people and commands us to do the same, but to hate the sin as HE does…And Yes, HE does bestow Grace upon us, but when you learn better you’re suppose to do better and repent (turn away) from what HE labels as sin. To knowingly and defiantly disobey GOD’s standards of sexual behavior…or any other practice which HE condemns as sin… can block GOD’s Grace and lead one to the destiny HE has reserved for Satan and all who defy the statutes of HIS Kingdom. Christians are messengers, commissioned to deliver HIS word to the world so no one can say they did not know. GOD always gives us free choice of obedience or defiance…accompanied by knowledge of the consequences of those choices. The choice is ours to make.

  9. Michael Wells

Plain and simple. Kirk Franklin is so far off! He only shows his true ignorance of the Holy Scriptures and he definitely proves more and more that he absolutely is not one of God’s preacher’s but the world’s. He nothing more than a worldly entertainer perpetrating a follower of Jesus Christ. God has given us His Holy Word, plainly tells us what is required to inherit eternal life with Him, yet charlatans like him twist/manipulate truth to please a people that practice all manner of sin and ungodliness. He is only concerned about being relevant and popular at the expense of putting multitudes of souls in jeopardy with foolish philosophy and mis-application of scripture. If he really knew anything truly about God’s Love, he would know that real love tells the truth. Sin is sin and anyone that practices sin period will reap the wages of death. You too Kirk if you don’t tell the truth as All liars will have their part in the lake of fire; that includes the fearful and unbelieving. Play with God’s truth if you want to but don’t be surprised when you close your eyes in death, that open them to find out He doesn’t know you. If you cannot exegete God’s Word correctly, you need to be taught because right now, any true, adamant believer know you are completely non-effective in the Body of Christ and for the Kingdom. Who’s side are you really on? Stop fooling yourself.

  10. Molly

he’s so twisted and mixed up in his theology, Im surprised he remembers his own name. He makes several very true statements here…….but at the same time, mixes in a lot on bunk- modern day “love ONLY” doctrine that so many have fallen for. You can take a beautiful, pristine white dress and dip it in a mud puddle. It’s STILL a white dress, but now it isn’t fit to wear. That’s exactly what Franklin and the thousands of other politically correct “Christians” have done to the pure, uncompromising gospel. The Bible is very clear, and firm, in it’s warning to people who lead others astray with devlish doctrine

  11. Chrissy

I personally have no understanding as to how the “black” church is accused of being homophobic . Gays are active EVERYWHERE in all positions especially in music. It’s one reason why some men chose NOT to participate in ministerial services!!! Unfortunately, the black church is one of the most gay-loving entities around! MANY gays make a living from the “black church”. This is getting old.

It won’t be long before they will begin apologizing to pedophiles!!! I am actively involved in prison ministry and the sad part is that I see the “after effects” of a body of believers who have been brain-washed by the perversion of grace. We need to consider that we are losing the standards of what the Scriptures say. Our society is losing it… And the church is right in the middle of it all. We need deliverance from the “hoopla” popularity Gospel on all levels.

  12. M.

The last comment is definitely something I would of said, not just the African-American community but the entire body of Christ. A true Christian isn’t homophobic, this word has been used out of context by the LGBT community for reasons like this; I don’t hate a gay person, it’s my duty to love them to the point that I bring the true gospel of Jesus Christ and that He is able to give them a better life outside the homosexual bubble they’re in.

  13. walk23

Kirk, stick to music. You apologizing for the Church to the LGBT community is counter productive to God’s message of salvation and is contrary to the act Jesus showed to the woman caught in the act of adultery. He did stop her from being putto death, but His warning to her was to sin no more. You quote the themes of grace and love but forget two of the more apt ones to those who are outside the will of God. The Bible says “seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness”, and that involves acceptance of Him and His design and a repentance toward that design. By apologizing to the homosexual, you send the wrong signal that their lifestyle is acceptable and welcomed within the Church, when it is not.
The Church is not meant to be a haven for every unclean spirit but a place of deliverance from those same spirits. Your rhettoric is that of inclusion, not of repentance that leads to salvation. Stick with the music, Kirk.

  14. Tonda Mason

Stop trying to sugar coat the word God vomits to gays our people are dying from lack of knowledge man e ‘ll leed you to hell read your Bible people and ask the LORD yourself for understanding. Please people now is the time Jesus waiting on you get your houses in order stop listening to foo foo the clown . Repent people Jesus is coming soon. Remember what happened when Noah said the flood know one listened and it was to late don’t get left behind. People peace be with you.

  15. Clayton

I never been aligned with Franklin’s ideology of Christianity, and his comments upholds my reasons.

I am so tired of hearing charge of “homophobia” from a untoward society and of in-the flesh thinking Christians. I agree, sometime l cringed when across the pulpit l hear preaching that would not lead to repentance, but is unwelcoming to any unsaved soul that sits on a pew to hear God’s forgiveness and matters of Calvary. The church does not fear or hate the homosexual. We are however disgusted that they refused to come out of their sin just as any other sinner must. They expect the church to change our belief system just as a sin filled world has. The word of God is unchangeable and we are to grow into the image of Christ, not into a worldly view.

God IS love, as is a mantra of thier argument to sin, yet he IS holy mandate to come out of sin

  16. su

I thank our Father for your ministry, and I hope that all the haters in the past, present and future, .apologize to you. You have spoken this for so many years with opposition from so call Christians. Hopefully this article and many more will solidify the goal and intentions of these so called Christian artist “MONEY”

    Amen Billy Boyd!!!

Kirk Franklin definitely does not speak for me!

  18. Edwin

I will not apologize for standing on the word of God. The bible is clear this issue of homosexual. The problem is here is the misunderstanding grace. It is true that we are saved by grace however grace doesn’t not permit us to live a lifestyle of sin. The church loves everyone but will endorse sin and make it sound cool to the person practicing that particular sin. Anyone who is in favour of homosexuality does not read the Bible or is has an hidden agenda. Sin is sin there are not two ways about it

  19. Emmanuel Unuafe

The bible might be God’s love letter. But I know God talks a lot about righteousness and justice and the fear of the Lord. I also know from Scriptures that God’s judgment on the world is fast approaching, therefore, I cannot stop preaching against evil especially in the body of Christ. Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. How will the world know if we don’t preach it.
Psalms 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
1 Peter 2:8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

  20. Joe

I think Kirk Franklin is apologizing, because he is one of the faces out here in the entertainment world. He said a lot and there is so much more to say,so don’t be so hard on the brother, because he just giving his testimony and truth, there is no sin bigger or smaller then the other.God loves of all at the end of the day and he want us to live a Holy and righteous life,so like Kirk said he didn’t write the bible.Let’s pray fast, read God’s word and let him guide us,because he is coming back, and none no the day or time.

    1. Sherry

I think you misunderstood… Kirk Franklin is claiming to represent “the Church” and he is apologizing that “the Church” is drawing a line against homosexuality. There is nothing Holy about that…

  21. Lucille

Why is he apologizing for the church. I am part of the church and I do not need him to apologize for me. This is a perfect example of someone denying the truth. The bible clearly says that the remedy for all sin and I say again all sin is repentance. This aint about Love, grace, or mercy. It is about the need for repentance. Why does he not talk about this. Please Kirk.

  22. Joshua

This statement that he made is very, very unsettling
““I want people to see the love of God and not the fear of God,” he explained to Pix11. “I want people to be able to experience how much God loves us as His kids. And most people will never have that view of God if we keep putting the rules in front of them instead of the relationship.”

This is not biblical. The bible says “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge:
but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7” This clear. The Hebrew for the word in this passage can mean reverence, but it also means actual fear! God’s wrath towards sin real! There is no talk about the love of God without talking about his hate of sin. And its a true disservice we would do to anyone we speak to about the gospel to talk about Gods love, without telling them that they need to turn away from the actions that would lead to the wrath of God. Even Jesus said

“For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Luke 12:1”

Obedience of Gods command is the first and foremost in what we do! We don’t get the blessing of God without denying ourselves first.

  23. Hyacinth

Not only are they bombarding the Church locally, but they are being imported. One ‘youth pastor’ in Brooklyn, NY, who is an alleged pedophile, and is highly likely to be involved in, or is aware of information that might aid in a murder investigation in his homeland, ran away from his homeland, and is being fostered by a well established church in Brooklyn. Many of the congregants do not know what is taking place. His wife has divorced him and he left his country before he got his divorce. Pedophilic homosexual – put in charge of congregants children and the congregants do not know. It is a crying shame. A crying ABOMINATION!!!! But all the leaders of the church knows it and because of fear of loosing their titles, they sit and cower agreeing with everything the ‘leader’ growls.
