The Tragic Story of Demas 116/911: Mission Now Impossible
2 Timothy 4:10: “For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.”
Demas – who once worked beside Paul had abandoned the apostle. Demas did not finish the race; instead he dropped out just when Paul was about to die. He left Paul just when the apostle’s need was greatest. We are even told why he did this: Demas loved this present world. He preferred the riches of this world over the sufferings of Christ. He chose the world over God because he loved the world more. The cautionary account of Demas is a very sobering one, and it ought to serve as a strong warning to us all.
Paul wrote, “I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (1 Cor. 9:27). Demas had been a faithful servant of the Lord, and a trusted companion of the apostle Paul. He served the greatest cause, and he served alongside some of the Lord’s most devoted disciples. Such distinction, however, was not sufficient to preserve him from the wiles of Satan, the lure of the world, and the lusts of the fleshly nature. We must ever be on guard lest we too lose sight of the prize and turn our gaze to that which is only destined to perish with the using. James warned: “Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world just makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4).
Demas, the once devoted disciple and enthusiastic evangelist, “having loved this present world,” abandoned Paul in the hour of his greatest need, and return to the pursuits of this present age. May our God preserve us from following the same perilous path!
In the past 3 years there’s been a lot of concern surrounding artist signed to Reach Records who had abruptly changing their philosophy in an effort to “change the way people see the world.” During an interview with Rapzilla Lecrae hinted that he was changing his approach to ministry when asked about his then upcoming mixtape “Church Clothes” hosted by Don Cannon.
“I’m not saying that a Christian audience shouldn’t listen to this I think it would be beneficial for them, however I don’t think you’re gonna get some of the same type of messages that you’re use to nor the same kind of music. Lecrae continued, “It wouldn’t be a whole lot of “commercial” music on here, its going to be raw uncut HipHop.”
A few months later his method and message became clear, a New Reach Order was on the rise in Christian Rap music. Reach artist then started to campaign against the “Christian” identity or label. They no longer wanted to be identified as a “Christian HipHoppers”, but as “HipHoppers who happen to be Christian.” Yet their fan base continued to support their new direction in hopes of seeing their idol share the stage with their favorite secular HipHop artist. Some even argued that Lecrae, a self-proclaim indigenous missionary was going to eventually win secular artists to Christ.
But the plight of this modern day Demas didn’t stop. In 2014 Reach Records signed a (covenant) agreement with Red Distribution, which is a marketing and distribution division of Sony Music Entertainment who already represent artist such as Alicia Keys, A$AP Rocky, Chris Brown and many other artist.
“Both Reach and RED share a singular vision of success,” said Bob Morelli, President of RED Distribution. “RED is so proud to be their partners, and we look forward to assisting Ben, Lecrae, and the entire Reach team in producing their next marketing, sales and artist development success stories.”
Suddenly Lecrae become more visible, he started to receive more recognition and secular notoriety. So in came the national interviews, BET, MTV and a myriad of Award Shows. He even won his first Grammy Award in 2013 for his debut album Gravity. But if you look back at an interview Lecrae and Tedashii did with Ozone April 20, 2011 – it was became too obvious that Reach Records was seeking the validation from the world.

Slowly we started to witness the Word of God and the message of EX Ministries come alive. (Mark 8:36-37) “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (1 John 2:15-17) “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
March 17, 2013 via Facebook Lecrae was engaging his fans and a young lady questioned his new direction in ministry. He responded by saying,”My mission hasn’t changed, my message hasn’t changed. My music has and rightly so.”
In the past 36 months Reach Records had gone from unashamed to ashamed. Today Their message reflect a selfish desire to just do good art, and not be so (Gospel) preachy. However, Lecrae still wasn’t satisfied on twitter September 2, 2013, he grew increasingly frustrated when certain radio station wouldn’t play his music.
The Blind Leading the Blind
Now in comes Lecrae’s protege Andy Mineo, who has recently emerged as the new face of (Demas) Reach Records. Andy has even taken the compromise further by repeatedly shaming the Gospel on every platform he’s been given by Sony. Through his own covetousness, Idolatry, Selfish Ambition & the Pride of Life. (1John 2:15-17 , Gal. 1:10, Luke 6:26, John 15:19, John 7:7 ) Andy’s actions has revealed that he has fallen in love with the world. This is what happens when we are selfishly ambitious, and led by our own wisdom and carnal desires. The world views us as needy and covetous. So they’ll invite us to the studios to perform and show off our skills as long as we don’t speak with conviction, contend for the faith and preach the Gospel.
“If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.”
Nevertheless the end game is Cd sales, bigger platforms and more opportunities. The worlds system isn’t concern with anything else but the bottomline. They love the talent but could careless about what we believe.
Christ cannot be glorified along with our selfish ambitions. We cannot promote Romans 1:16 and ourselves at the same time and expect the message to catch up with the Art. This is the mind of Lucifer as describe in (Ezekiel 28:16-19)..”By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.”
From 116 to 911: Changed Method & Message
2014 Mission Statement
“Art functions as the billboard of culture. New ideas and values move through art and work their way into the fabric of the people. Major movements all had a soundtrack formed around them, and in some cases the music sparked the movement.
At Reach, our passion is changing the way people see the world. The reason we create music and media, and travel the world to hit stages big and small is not simply to be successful. From the early days in 2004 working out of closets and selling CD’s out the trunk, to charting on Billboard and touring internationally, our goal has always been the hearts of people.
Our hope lies in the person and work of Jesus. If this man was a mere teacher our work would be influenced by him. Yet he claims to be God and change the hearts of humanity. That is the message we bring. Everyone is preaching something, whether it’s the gospel of money, power and sex, or even education and the American dream. We aim to serve through art, to bring healing and show others a different way to view their world.
2015 Mission Statement
“What are we about? Reach Records began in a couple of closets. One served as the headquarters, with a desk and a printer. The other was the makeshift studio. Like many startups, passion overrides the lack of experience and drives it forward. We were excited to make a difference, ready to see the world change. Even then, when concerts might be the 15 students at the local Boys and Girls club, the desire to speak into the heart and soul of the listeners is what fueled the creative and strategic efforts at the label. A nucleus of college students who ran together in the Dallas, TX area provided the pool for the first artists on Reach. The work in the studio and on stage was reflection of the impact and lifestyle they lived everyday.
With literal trunk of the car distribution to start, word spread fast across the country about a group of artists unashamed to be themselves and remain true to their convictions. With a fanatical dedication to artistic excellence things began to take off. Fast forward over a decade and now the achievements are larger, the sales are stronger, the mixes sound nicer, but the goal is still the same: To change the way people see the world. Rather than find our significance in the status quo, we want to remember that success is not how well we’ve done compared to others, but how well we are doing what we were created to do.”
For I am Not Ashamed
Paul was about the gospel; and it is one of his favorite doctrines that they who believe on Christ shall not be ashamed. He had firm a conviction of its value and its truth that he was so far from being ashamed of it that he gloried in it as the power of God unto salvation. (Romans 10:11; Romans 5:5; 2 Corinthians 7:14; 2 Timothy 1:12; Philippians 1:20; Romans 9:33; 2 Timothy 1:8; compare Mark 8:38; 1 Peter 4:16; 1 John 2:28.)
Of the gospel – This word means the “good news,” or the glad intelligence; see the note at Mark 1:1. It is so called because it contains the glad annunciation that sin may be pardoned, and the soul saved.
Of Christ – The good news respecting the Messiah; or which the Messiah has brought. The expression probably refers to the former, the good news which relates to the Messiah, to his character, advent, preaching, death, resurrection, and ascension. Though this was “to the Jews a stumbling-block, and to the Greeks foolishness,” yet he regarded it as the only hope of salvation, and was ready to preach it even in the rich and splendid capital of the world.
The power of God – This expression means that it is the way in which God exerts his power in the salvation of people. It is the efficacious or mighty plan, by which power goes forth to save, and by which all the obstacles of man’s redemption are taken away.
“For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.” (Luke 9:26)

Trojan Horse 2 – Pride of Life
The church of the living God is under attack. A deadly Trojan virus has breached our fortified walls. We’ve been infected. This virus is known as ‘the pride of life’. As it spreads, infected individuals succumb to the ‘lust of the flesh’ and ‘the lust of the eyes’. The symptoms of .. infection are idolatry, covetousness and selfish ambition. But beware these symptoms are masked as virtue, honesty and moral conviction in compromised believers. Outwardly, infected individuals express a desire to glorify God but inwardly they seek self-glorification and the praise of others.
The ‘pride of life’ virus requires a human host that is a professed Christian and has deep rooted personal deficits. This virus has tragically been implanted into the hearts of believers, families, ministries and churches through the primary carrier, Gospel celebrities. Satan has unleashed this calamity among us by deceptively using the material world and men of the world to advance his kingdom.
The only way for the church to be restored unto God is to unplug from the world’s system. Join Tetaun Moffett of EX Ministries on an unparalleled journey to explore the plight of the modern church. Be challenged to overcome personal deficits, reject the ‘pride of life’ and experience an uncompromised relationship with God.
