Ma$e Leaves His Church To Rap Full Time Again

By SkyyHook, Contributing Editor | michiganchronicle online.com

51CQ6akfQpL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_Ma$e has cut all ties with the church and is now devoting all of himself to music. TMZ reports that the Harlem rapper is no longer leading the El Elyon International Church, months after filing for divorce from wife Twyla Betha. The 36-year-old has been in a similar predicament before. In 1999, he left the music industry in order to work in the church. Throughout that time, he amassed a large following at churches in Atlanta and Phoenix, preaching relationship and family values. In 2004, Mase announced his return by way of the gold-selling album Welcome Back, but it wasn’t until recently that he apparently decided to make the full move back into music.

After his marriage crumbled, Mase’s followers left, since he wasn’t exactly living the life that he was preaching about, according to TMZ. In the end, Mase was able to settle his divorce after he dropped the fight for full custody of the couple’s two children. He was ordered to pay Twyla $6,000 a month in spousal and child support, while she was ordered to return all of his music. Mase’s new album will feature Kanye West, Rick Ross and Diddy, and will be released in October.

April 1999  Ma$e revealed that he was retiring from rap to become a born-again Christian, stating that he’d found God.

May 2004 returns to rap and announces Welcome Back album to drop on Bad Boy Records.

July 2004 During an interview with Hot 97’s Morning Show, Ma$e engaged in a heated conversation with longtime friends Cam’Ron and Jim Jones after detailing the reason for his spilt with the crew. “I don’t like you. You shouldn’t have came out your mouth. I’ll put some dentures in your mouth,” exclaimed Jones. “Go back down south with your congregation.” Ma$e brushed off the insults later on in the interview stating, “I love them dudes. It’s just sad when people don’t understand.”

August 2004 Backed by singles “Welcome Back” and “Breathe, Stretch, Shake”—both cracking the top 10 on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart—Ma$e’s third studio album Welcome Back releases to sales of about 188,000 copies its first week, on the way to 550,000 in total. After the album’s release, Betha hooked up with Kanye West for remixes to “Jesus Walks” and “Welcome Back,” and also joined Fat Joe, Eminem and Remy Ma for the “Lean Back (Remix).” Soon after this return however, Ma$e would go on another rap hiatus.

August 2005 After making a surprise appearance with 50 Cent and G-Unit on the Anger Management 3 Tour, Ma$e returns and releases his debut G-Unit mixtape, Crucified 4 the Hood: 10 Years of Hate along with reclaiming his former Murda Ma$e moniker. During this return, he engaged in beef with Fabolous, Loon and Dipset and eventually would go on another rap hiatus after his G-Unit deal didn’t fall through. The rapper was also rumored to be having a fling with former G-Unit songstress, Olivia.

October 25, 2005 EX Ministries member (Tetaun Moffett) reached out to then Pastor Ma$e at S.A.N.E. Church pleading with him to not return to the industry. In the letter Moffett expressed that the world was going to make a mockery of his testimony if he returned to the Industry (Hiphop).  He reminded them of what Ma$e wrote in his autobiography, Revelations: There’s a Light After the Lime and how he would never go back to the industry. That same day EX Ministries received a email response on behalf of Ma$e:

Trojan Horse – Pride of Life

pride_product_imageThe church of the living God is under attack. A deadly Trojan virus has breached our fortified walls. We’ve been infected. This virus is known as ‘the pride of life’. As it spreads, infected individuals succumb to the ‘lust of the flesh’ and ‘the lust of the eyes’. The symptoms of .. infection are idolatry, covetousness and selfish ambition. But beware these symptoms are masked as virtue, honesty and moral conviction in compromised believers. Outwardly, infected individuals express a desire to glorify God but inwardly they seek self-glorification and the praise of others. The ‘pride of life’ virus requires a human host that is a professed Christian and has deep rooted personal deficits.

This virus has tragically been implanted into the hearts of believers, families, ministries and churches through the primary carrier, Gospel celebrities. Satan has unleashed this calamity among us by deceptively using the material world and men of the world to advance his kingdom. The only way for the church to be restored unto God is to unplug from the world’s system.

Join Tetaun Moffett of EX Ministries on an unparalleled journey to explore the plight of the modern church. Be challenged to overcome personal deficits, reject the ‘pride of life’ and experience an uncompromised relationship with God. Order Here!

This is hurting me to my heart to see his descent back into darkness. Why??? I just don’t understand how he allowed himself to be lured back into the world. My best friend used to attend his church back in 2000 and credited the fire she saw in him as the reason she returned to her walk with the Lord. He seemed so genuine in the beginning. I just feel so sorry for his ex-wife a children, and how the marriage fell apart. Him and Tonex are probably the two saddest cases I’ve seen thus far in my walk with Christ. I pray that they both repent and turn from their wicked ways before it’s too late.

All I can say is that is what the word says no man can truly encounter God and walk away is so my thoughts is that he never had encountered him he was embracing a false sense of god because there’s no way you can encounter God to walk away.

    1. Mrs. Anderson

I like what you said but honestly I think he was like the rich man who encounterd Jesus and ultimantly walked away because he couldn’t handle the truth that Jesus told him he must do in order to truly follow him. I think Mase felt something there like the rich man did but he couldn’t handle letting go of his past rap /hip hop life to truly continue to follow Jesus.

From that story, it was only a matter of time before he went back to where he started. Seems he was leaning way off the fence to what he really wanted to do. Goes to that old saying…don’t let the devil ride with you, then he’ll want to take over and drive. He said it himself in the interview with Flex, referring to “it” was calling him back to rap and was meant to be. Why every second of each day we must deny our filthy flesh and stay girded with the word of God because it will draw you back. Saints we have to stay strong.

  4. Max

I need to speak out on this. I am also a minister of the gospel and it doesn’t surprise me one bit that he left the church for the world again after ‘finding God’. I am black and, being raised in black churches of all kinds, I know that the measure of the gospel it takes to keep most people saved is not found. The gospel of Jesus Christ is not found in the four walls of the ‘pimp’ church as we know it today. Ma$e found the same bs in the church as he found in the world. I don’t blame him, I blame us. Why should he quit pimping and making mega money when he saw the inner circle of his leadership do the same thing. Maybe the vision God gave him involved giving instead of taking. I’m not saying every church is the same but most of us have been deceived for a long time. Pray for us more than him.

    1. Iris

Max, I couldn’t’ve said it better. I too am a minister of the Gospel and you are right. Sadly, the large portion of the Body does not realize how far from the Mark we have strayed. I pray for not only him but for us. God admonishes those in leadership in so many places in scripture (Jeremiah and Malachi notably) for misleading His people. Woe unto the pastors/shepherds/preachers for we will have to account for those like Ma$e, whom we have allowed to be corrupted because of our own corruption. (btw lol @ pimp church!) And the answer is also found in the Word….”Return unto Me…” God says…….

  5. Ms. Graham

Did he really ask the church to pray for him as he give his soul back to the world? May the Lord God Almighty have great mercy upon him.

  6. watchman

We are in the GREAT FALLING AWAY period. Let’s be in CONSTANT PRAYER, because it’s going to get WORSE as the APPEARING of Christ nears.

  7. Natalie

Ah Ma$e! My heart cries out for you :( How can a man cleanse his ways? By taking heed to the word of God Psalms 119:9. Thine word have I hid in my heart so that I will not sin against you. Psalms 119:11.
I pray for you Ma$e that you follow the Lord’s calling back to His fold and may you never desire to be apart of this world again. Father have mercy on his soul and convict him and restore him back to his first Love (You)

  8. Mrs. Anderson

In reference to the first clip I think he allowed pride to take over like Lucifer did. It’s the same sad cycle so many musically inclined people fall victim to. Temptation is real and that is why we are called to crucify our flesh daily. It’s not a once and for all type of thing. One line of defense he should’ve had was his wife praying for his behind and tearing in his behind for keep swaying back and fourth. My husband does music for the Lord and it will be a cold day in hell before I let him get involved with labels and the satanic music industry. I pray for him daily and I made sure he knew what I thought of any notion to even go that way. Also the fact that he didn’t have a strong wife by his side to help keep him on track is sad. People temptation is real, Satan is real, hell is real, but most importantly the prayers of the righteous is real. Can you get a prayer through when your brother/sister in Christ needs it the most? This article makes me prayer for my husband even more fervently. Thanks EX for posting this and te timeline showing how you guys actually reached out to this dude.

  9. Carl

Wow. Great research. This information was very informative. In that first video he was really teaching but the second video showed a contrast. I do believe music ministers to people at different level. I also do believe there are saints in Caesar house but I won’t endorse them, I shouldn’t if it will cause others to fall and get confused.

    (Phil 4:22) (1 Tim 5:22) (1 Cor 8:13) (Rom 14:21)

It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. (Rom 14:21)

Ma$e is also in a remix with a new artist Troy Ave. I haven’t really heard that song but don’t desire to at the moment.

    Johann Sebastian Bach said:
“The aim and final reason of all music should be none else but the glory of God and refreshing the soul. Where this is not observed there will be no music, but only a devilish hubbub.”

This guy is know for many songs and quotes. Some of his songs are still played in Weddings today.

All I can say at the moment is:

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; ~Colossians 3:23

  10. George Kung'u

I can’t judge Mase Bathel because we don’t know that challenges he’s facing, mine is to pray for him and to remind him of what Christ said. Is it worth it to gain the Whole World and Lose your own Soul !

Bottom line is, he WAS NOT ready to pastor. Who is this minister who ordained him so soon? And where was his discernment and wisdom? Takes time to be remade after all he had experienced.

  12. george harrison

I believe some ministries including T.D. Jakes, TBN channel and some others are quick to put newly converted worldly popular entertainers and athletes in the lime light when they should be teaching and discipling them about Christianity and other struggles they will face concerning fan base and the industry wanting them back. These celebrity people need prayer and teaching not given a pulpit and title when they are babes in Christ. Now Mase’s ministry may have negatively affected believers who was members in his church. Lets pray for them and Mase that he will find his way back to Christ. What profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul. Wow, in the interview clip, the interviewer called him murder Mase.
