Why do some people despise truth and truth preachers? The answer is written in plain sight in the bible. The word of God says that in the last days, people will not be able to endure sound doctrine but after their own lusts, they will choose teachers that will preach what they want to hear. When a person preaches truth, it makes those that may have erred and gone their own way look bad.
Pride is all about looking good and making what you do and have better than what others have and do. So, when the truth comes and sound doctrine exposes the proud look and prideful heart, it makes folks angry! Remember Cain and Abel? Cain killed him because he felt Abel made him look bad! God even beckoned Cain to change and just do what Abel is doing so he could be approved of, but Cain was so worried about looking bad, he ignored God and killed his own brother!
People that cannot endure sound doctrine have usually fashioned their lives against it and do not desire to change because of what people will think of them. Sound doctrine is about creation roles and sticking to the plan of God for your life but pride is about achievements, accolades, and other people’s opinions. When it’s the opinion of others you are living for, sound doctrine will mess it all up and in your own eyes, make you look bad. So, the truth preacher gets attacked and the truth gets hidden for these reasons.
2Tim. 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2Tim. 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
2Tim. 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
