According to screen writer/Hollywood producer Daniel Petrie Jr, “We look at reality TV, which is billed as unscripted, and we know it is scripted.” Petrie Jr continued, “We understand that shows don’t want to call the writers writers because they want to maintain the illusion that it is reality, that stuff just happens.” Celebrity reality TV is impromptu style entertainment involving celebrities or wannabes. A camera crew captures and documents their every day life for entertainment and social popularity. It is a known fact that celebrity reality TV is often produce to help further promote an individuals career or showcase an upcoming project.
Recently there has been an increase of “gospel” or so called “Christian” theme reality TV shows that continues to flood the networks. Many have credited God for opening up doors for what appears to be success. While others have suggested that this is how we enter the marketplace ministry, referencing Acts 17.
You know, “take back Hollywood for the Kingdom of God.” But the True Church, the Church that’s called out from amongst the world will have to contend against this. The end game is covetousness, idolatry, selfish ambition and the pride of life. No where in scripture did Paul go into the theaters of Athens and entertain the Greeks and Romans with his image promoting himself. He wasn’t seeking a platform to put his life on display for transparency. “Got to let the world see that I’m not perfect. That I’m just a sinner who is saved by grace. My life is just like yours. Don’t judge me either.”
He didn’t gather writers, poets and actors – hypocrites to solicit an opportunity to feature faith base plays, and performances. Under no circumstances did he engage culture with religious entertainment. Paul didn’t go about scratching ears to get people to like him and his message. It was never about Paul, it was always about Christ crucified. So what are we doing?
These show are fruit-less. They are built around individuals seeking approval from carnal minded christians. Boasting in their imperfections and bringing glory to “their gospel” and not the Gospel of Jesus Christ – which is perfect.
But is God pleased with their efforts, is he being glorifed in the earth? Especially when the so called “Christian” seek to be like by the world in order to reach them. Usurping its influence to add to their own kingdoms.
Or could it just be the ambitious Christian; when led by popular culture, they only take their cue from the world. (II Timothy 4:3) But there are those who are led by the Spirit of God who will not seek the approval of the world to satisfy the lust of the people, but will stand on His Word. (II Timothy 4:2, 2 Corinthians 6:17)
Hollywood is controlled by satan so what makes the Christian think it will defer its profit and influence to allow you to stand adamantly for Christ without compromise. What makes the Christian think Hollywood would lend its platform and not attempt to discredit the image of the Church. “The Holy Spirit used those women. Souls were saved after watching the Sisterhood,” said an anonymous guess on TLC’s Sisterhood blog. Really.
Charles Spurgeon once stated: “We cannot be fishers of men if we remain among men in the same element with them. Fish will not be fishers. The sinner will not convert the sinner. The ungodly man will not convert the ungodly man; and, what is more to the point, the worldly Christian will not convert the world.”
Those whose ambition is to be popular with the world cannot be true, faithful servants of Jesus Christ. If our ambition is to seek the things of the world (1 John 2:16; Romans 13:14), in truth, we are selfish and we’re denying Christ and His sacrifice (Matthew 10: 33; Matthew 16:24). But it is our ambition to seek and honor Christ.
